Love the Postman

I love ebay and getting mail and I've gotten a bunch of stuff over the past few weeks. This will be a picture heavy post.

These are some of the back issues of magazines and hard cover books I got

More books I received and my son Kyle. He insisted on being in the picture

Ann, from Beadlework, was selling some silk floss from Caron. So I bought the skeins. They are gorgeous!

These are Soie Crystal. Aren't they beautiful?!?!

These are Caron Waterlilies, the two on the left are cotton, the rest are silk. They are just gorgeous!

Ann included a gift of a very pretty beaded scissor fob. These actually fit my scissors so I put them on. This is my one pair of needlework scissors that my friend Curtis gave me a few years ago on Christmas.

Thank you so much Ann! The silks are gorgeous and the fob is wonderful!

Back in May I had a giveaway for a couple gift certificates to 123 Stitch (ONS). Karen (Karen's Handiwork) was one of the winners. In late September I received a small package, inside were these gorgeous hand made note cards! Karen made them for me as a Thank You for the giveaway! They are beautiful Karen, thank you so much!

And last but not least..a crochet project I finished:

In one of the Leisure Arts The Magazine issues I got was this pattern for little Christmas Stockings in thread crochet. They looked easy enough so I thought I'd give it a try. This is my first one. I think it is adorable! I started a second one that will be red on top and white for the rest. Near the top a thin ribbon will be run through the stitches (I have to get some ribbon).

I have done some work on Christmas Dreams but didn't take a new picture. I filled in the stitches I skipped in Santa's hair and upper beard, so the progress is not easy to see. Hopefully I will do some more stitching on him today and upload a new pic in a couple days.

Help Please

I tried backstitching Frogging Around's letters with both the darkest teal in the variegated and with black floss, neither looked good. So I started the letters again with 909 (that's the Y), the frog is done in 911.

The original called for a variegated Six Strand Sweets that looks to be a combo of purples and greens (dark). So I layed a bunch of different colors on the fabric but I can't make up my mind which to use. The first pic shows a decent representation of the actual fabric color. I'm leaning towards 702, 704, or 4050. I want something that will look nice, but stand out on the fabric so the letters will be visible.

It is a mix of dark and light shades of green with grays as well

This pic is clickable to make it bigger.
I am leaning towards 702, 704, or 4050 which is in 4th row, third from the left.
Top color: 739 Letter "Y" 909
2nd Row: 676, 744, 4050, 4120
3rd Row: 680, 782, 437
4th row: 955, 702, 704, 369, 208
5th Row: 3837, 552, 3834, 3835

Please guys give me your opinions because I am stumped. I just can't figure it out, though I think part of it is because I stink at color changing (which is why I rarely change charted colors) and because I am annoyed by this project. It shouldn't have taken more than a week and its been a month and I've already frogged the words 5 times. I put the purples on there because the original floss had purple in it and I like purple but I don't think it goes on the green fabric with a green frog.

Heck maybe I should just do the letters in black. ARRGGGHHH..ok putting this aside for a bit and waiting for your opinions. I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

New project: I started an afghan 2 nights ago. I did the gauge swatch and was very disappointed to find that despite stitching really loosely and using a hook 2 sizes larger than the pattern calls for, I still came up half an inch short on the gauge. So I gave up and did the starting chain with more stitches than called for, until it was 45" long, which is how wide the afghan should be. Since it is an afghan getting exact gauge isn't such a big deal like it would be for a sweater or something. Also it is a very simple pattern of double crochet, nothing fancy, so adding extra stitches won't disrupt the pattern.I am going to use a special stitch near the ends to add a raised area, just for a bit of decoration. Since this is simply a matter of doing front post doubles in the same spot as a double crochet would go, it won't upset the pattern or size either and it will add some depth and interest I think. Here's hoping I can actually finish this afghan, if so it will be my first.

Update on Winter Blackwork, final finish of 2008 and goal review 2008, new goals 2009!

I managed to finish Exciting doilyby Mary Werst and I gave it to my mother-in-law while I was in Indiana over the holidays visiting her. She was really excited to get it! Here it is:

Here is a closeup:

In my last post I promised a picture of my progress on Tam's Creations Winter Blackwork. So here it is as of December 2008.

Since it is now 2009 I figure I should go over the goals I made for 2008 and see if I met them at all. The original post is here and my goals were:

  1. Have at least 10 finishes. I seem to have confused my goals. Here I wrote I want 10, but on webshots I wrote that I wanted more than 2007. I did not meet my blog goal but I did meet my webshots goal. I have 5 finishes in cross stitch for 2008.
  2. complete stitched ornaments into completed ready to hang up ornaments I got a couple done, but not all of them.
  3. Finish either Stroke of Midnight or Woodland Fairy by TW (preferably finish both) nope
  4. Participate in at least 2 swaps/exchanges (I was so happy to get my 2008 re-approval from CSC!) DONE
  5. Continue to encourage Curtis and now Stephanie (My sister-in-law who has moved into the house) to stitch as well. DONE
  6. complete at least one (preferably more) of the harder thread crochet doilies that are at the half way point (I am afraid I'll mess them up even though I have done them well so far LOL) DONE both of them!
  7. Organize my stash and threads better DONE
  8. Continue to make thread crochet items as practice and maybe try to do an afghan or something larger than a 16 inch doily DONE by working on doilies but no afghan yet.
  9. complete at least 2 more charity squares DONE, did 3!

Not as good as I wanted, but not bad considering I didn't stitch at all in 2007! Now goals for 2009, lets see:

  1. Finish at least 10 pieces
  2. Finish one of the 2 TW's I have as WIPS
  3. Do at least 2 charity squares
  4. Participate in at least 2 exchanges
  5. Complete my excel sheet of magazines
  6. Create excel sheet of freebies
  7. Get Bridgette's birth sampler done
  8. Get parent's 50th anniversary sampler done
  9. Get Tinkerbell done for father in law
  10. continue thread crochet

That seems like a good list of goals. Hopefully I can do a good job with it through out 2009! So what are your goals for the New Year?

Doily Finish

I completed a doily called "Exceptional". It was designed by Mary Werst from the Leisure Arts booklet called "Extra Special Doilies". I am so surprised at how well it turned out. It looks just like the picture on the front cover! It is going to go on my dining room table, with a pretty vase in the center of it. I am so proud of myself! I just wish it hadn't taken a week to clean it (that's what I get for smoking), thought I was surprised once I blocked it that it only took 24 hours to dry completely. I really thought it would take longer than that. LOL

Here is a picture.

I am working on another doily from the same book. This one is called "Exciting". So far it looks great. I hope it comes out as good as the last one.
I should have some pics of my cross stitch projects soon as well. I am almost done with the backstitching for the Precious Moments square and I have done a bit more on the Winter Blackwork from Tam's Creations. I will try to get some pictures of both up soon.
My daughter had her surgery on Friday August 1, 2008. They did a lower lumbar fusion of L5-S1. So far she seems to be healing quite well. I continue to hope and pray that she heals well and that this surgery makes it possible for her to have her life back. A lot of people have been praying for her and I just want you all to know how much I appreciate the thoughts and prayers for her. She also appreciates them and wants me to tell you all that she says "thank you very much!".

Pain and Stitching

First, I am sorry but I don't have any pictures for this post. I am in a great deal of pain today and am about to go sit in bed and stitch to see if that can help me control it or at least ignore it.

I am just doing the back stitching for the PM square for WOCS and I have completed a doily that I started a LONG time ago. I was quite surprised that I completed it and it looks just like the picture in the chart! I need to wash it before I show a picture of it here and (pain level willing) hopefully I can do that tomorrow and post it.

I am asking that you keep my daughter in your thoughts and prayers. She is going to have a major surgery on her back on Aug. 1st. A fusion of L5-S1, pulling her spine back to where it should be and having rods placed to keep it there (correcting spondylolysis I think..my spelling is probably wrong). Hopefully this surgery will make it possible for her to at least work, though the doctors have said she is half disabled and can not hold a job that requires her to stand on her feet. I'm hoping that the surgery keeps her from being permanently disabled. It was hard to learn I was disabled and I don't want my DD to suffer the same emotional and mental pain I did. It is hard enough to accept that she will have pain for the rest of her life as it is. I just hope the surgery goes well and she is better when it is over.

Stitching Goals 2008 and Cute Baby!

Everyone is talking about stitching goals so I figured I'd try to set some goals for my stitching and crocheting. Maybe stating my goals in publc (so to speak) will help me to acheive them LOL

1: have at least 10 finishes

2: complete stitched ornaments into completed ready to hang up ornaments

3: Finish either Stroke of Midnight or Woodland Fairy by TW (preferably finish both)

4: Participate in at least 2 swaps/exchanges (I was so happy to get my 2008 re-approval from CSC!)

5. Continue to encourage Curtis and now Stephanie (My sister-in-law who has moved into the house) to stitch as well.

6: complete at least one (preferably more) of the harder thread crochet doilies that are at the half way point (I am afraid I'll mess them up even though I have done them well so far LOL)

7: Organize my stash and threads better

8: Continue to make thread crochet items as practice and maybe try to do an afghan or something larger than a 16 inch doily

9: complete at least 2 more charity squares

I think that's a pretty good list of goals. I do hope to complete more than I stated here but I'm not sure how much stitching time I will get now that a baby is in the house for a while. Oh but I am so excited to have her here! Her name is Bridgette and she is 4 months old and such a sweetie! I am so happy to have her and her mom (My sister-in-law) Stephanie staying with us for a while.

Happy Holidays and Picture Catch Up

Here are the charts I got for Christmas. My DSD gave me the "Dawn, the fairy Spirit of Grace" chart from Passione Ricamo. My DH gave me Circe The Sorceress by Passione Ricamo as well as the fabric Bewitched by Polstitches Designs that is created specifically for that pattern. I am so so so happy!! I can't wait to kit them up and start stitching!

Here are the pictures of most of the crochet peices I have been doing as well. A rather large peice has no picture as it is not done yet, and a smaller peice is being used so it is not pictured either. There are 5 more angels that are not pictured, a silver one, gold one, white one and two red ones that I gave as presents.

Here is an ornament that I helped my friend Curtis make. He wanted to learn how to stitch so I helped him and he stitched this ornament for his mother for Christmas. I put it together and crocheted the hanger.

Last but not least, here is a picture of the ornament that I received in the Cross Stitch Crazy Ornament Exchange. It is stitched and finished by Jacque (momtogemma) and I LOVE IT! It has been hanging on my tree since I received it!! Thank you so very much Jacque!

Happy Holidays to everyone!!

Rough Week

Something happened to my back and I don't know what it is. I went to the emergency room beacuse it felt like the plate that holds my hip bone to my sacrum had moved or broken. According to the x-rays I had not broken the plate, nor had it moved from where it should be, but it does rock a bit since the screws are now all loose. The doctor thought it was the swelling that I have (my whole body with pitted edema in my legs) which is causing the increased sciatica and major pain increase that sent me to the hospital. I've been in bed for most of the week to try and keep the pain controlled. Today is the first day that my pain level has been below a 7 as I am currently at a 5. The swelling has not gone down, even with the diuretic I have been put on, so I get to call my primary care doctor and go see them to start checking on my kidneys, which the ER doc told me to do. The idea that something is wrong with my kidneys really scares me.

I have been stitching though, mostly crochet. I've finished a bunch of small peices that I am not sure what to do with yet. Though the angels will be turned into a window decoration for Christmas next year. I put one of the doilies under the crystal nativity peices on top of the TV. It has a ruffled edge, but it looks okay. Well I think I'm going to go do a bit of stitching on Stroke of Midnight.

Pics As Promised and SBQ

Here are the pics of the two crochet items I finished. One is the lopsided bell, the other is another doily.

Here is a picture of the Christmas Blackwork Cat from the 2007 JCS Ornament issue that I am doing. It is done on Silkweaver 28ct jobelan.

This week's SBQ is:

Do you railroad?

Happy Stitching!

My Answer: I started using railroading when I was working on the Raccoon Baby for my DSD because it helped the threads to lay beside each other, rather than on top of each other. I will probably continue to use railroading, specially on blended stitches.

A Blogging We Will Go..Hi-Ho The Dairy-O, A Blogging We Will Go

I have been participating in stitching posting boards for a little over a month now and enjoying it quite a bit. I post on Cross Stitch Crazy and Rotation Stitchers. I have found the people on both boards to be very welcoming, talented and supportive of each other. On many of the posts the authors include inks to the photo albums, websites, or blogs where one can see pictures of their projects (complete, in progress, and/or finished into beautiful items), friends, families, or vacations as well as read stories about those same topics and many more. Through these posts I have found many blogs that I read daily now and have spent time greatly enjoying looking at the pictures of other people's cross stitch, needlepoint, crochet, knitting or other hobbies. Doing so has woken up my desire to start doing the things I used to enjoy a great deal again and I am so very grateful to have that desire back.

It was not until the desire returned that I realized how depressed I had become. I know why I became depressed and I knew I was not feeling like myself, but I had not realized how bad it was. I live with chronic pain and for a few months the steroid injections and daily medication was barely keeping it under control. Being in intense pain all day long every day is extremely draining. For me, it caused me to lose all desire to do anything that I did not absolutely have to do because all my energies were focused on controlling the pain as best I could and keeping myself from making it worse by moving around too much. I finally realized that I was no longer just having a rough patch and that I was clinically depressed when my doctor put me on an anti-depressent because being in pain messes up the seratonin levels in the brain. After a few weeks I realized that I felt better in general and since the new medication was the only change I had to accept that I had become clinically depressed. So I told the doctor and she increased my medication and is titrating me to the proper dosage for depression. I have had bouts with clinical depression before so I felt pretty stupid that I had not recognized the symptoms this time. But I guess recognizing them a little late is better than never recognizing or refusing to even consider the idea of it. Though I am finding it difficult to break some of the behavior patterns that have developed as the pain levels got higher and the depression got worse. I am working on it though!

One of those hobbies I used to really enjoy was writing. I used to write a lot in my journals. I've written essays on many different topics, poems, short stories and even once I wrote what was ment to be a self-help type book for parents dealing with a toddler who was sexually abused. That one was done solely because when I found myself in that situation, there were no books to turn to that dealt with the issues facing parents and children in that situations. There was information available for parents of older children, adult survivors and their families/friends/support network; but there was nothing for parents of 3-9 year olds. At the time, I only found one book that dealt with children at all and that one was for parents of children starting from age 10. Also, it did not give any tips for handling the specific situations that I was dealing with at the time. I asked the social workers, therapists, pediatrician and psychiatrist involved and none of them knew of any books written for families of younger children. So eventually I decided to write my own. I Lost my ability to write the book and desire to publish it when 2 years later I had to handle the same thing all over again when her father got unsupervised visitation and molested my daughter like his mother had before him. I just emotionally and mentally could not do it and every time I have tried over the past 14 years to finish it (the manuscript is ready for a second rewrite) I just can't, it hurts too much.

Anyway, I noticed that since I have started cross stitching and crocheting again that my desire to write has returned as well. I've started to write in my journal, I've written a few poems which I will post soon and decided I'd start a blog as well. I figure it can't hurt and who knows, I might enjoy it and it might help me return to writing the way I used to, which is what I am truly hoping for.

I haven't been stitching too much this last week, instead I've been doing some thread crochet. It has been about a year since I have completed any thread crochet projects, though I did start one many months ago and since I don't remember what pattern it is from I had to undo it. The doily and angel that I did over the weekend do not have even tension within each stitch but I think they came out pretty good anyway. I really enjoyed doing them as well.

This is the angel ornament I did. I am probably going to give it to my mother-in-law for Christmas. I hope she likes it. Its a silver thread with a shiny silver metallic thread twisted throughout. That was a tad difficult to work with as the thread would twist up and tangle so I found I had to let it hang down and untwist every little while, like I have to do with cross stitch to prevent knots.

This is the doily I made. The picture makes it look a bit washed out, but it is really a nice dark mauve, which is one of the colors my mother really likes and I think it will match the colors in her bedroom very well.

I have a second angel and a thread crochet doily in progress now.

I'm working a couple different cross stich designs right now. One is a Christmas ornament for my daughter and is a cat done entirely in blackwork from the 2007 JCS Ornament Issue. The other is a mini Amish quilt for my mother-in-law. She likes to sew and has a lot of quilts on display in her home so I thought the mini-quilt design would be one she would really like.
